Super League & its Fallout

Wow.

That was the first word I said when I saw headlines about the potential of a Super League and the immediate crumble of soccer.

The Super League would be a soccer league of 12 of the best teams from around the world. World-class teams such as FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, and Real Madrid originally agreed on entering the league. Now, this may seem fun but these amazing teams leaving their original leagues would mean virtually no one would watch games from their old leagues.

The main reason this idea came to be is simply due to money. The league would make billions of dollars through ad revenue while other leagues would be panicking to stay afloat.

Soccer has one of the most loyal fan bases in the entire world. The history of these leagues and teams sate back to the mid-1800s so these teams have generational fans. When they heard teams were leaving for the Super League, absolute chaos spanned across Europe.

Fans gathered together and marched to their teams’ stadiums, protesting their decisions. It was amazing to see how fast teams pulled out of the league after seeing their fans protest so quickly. To me, it shows the culture of the fans and the bond between the team to the community.

I can happily tell you the Super League is no longer in the works.
